TRUSTING OUR MEMORIES

Sun 2/10/02

I don’t need to struggle to remember what I should be doing.

I need to be present to what I am doing.

Situation: Its cold and windy and off an on raining outside. Deanna wants a cup of sprite* she checked the refrigerator and the bottle we had bought earlier that day was not to be found. She asked me if I knew where the bottle was.

Dad: I do remember bringing it in from the car and setting by the door to my room. I don’t remember anything more than that.

Deanna: I remember you doing that too.

Dad: Well let’s look around. (we searched around the room and the other rooms we traveled and didn’t find it).

Deanna: Maybe you should go and check in the car.

Dad: If you are asking me to and check the car I will be glad to but I thought you also remembered brining the bottle in.

Deanna: I do

Dad: Well it doesn’t seem like you trust that memory. Think back, do you remember the bottle being in the house?

Deanna: Yes

Dad: If you do, then why should I go and check the car?

Deanna: I don’t know….looking puzzled

Dad: They are great questions sweetheart, How do we know when we can trust our memory? How de we know when we should question our memories?

Deanna: Yeah, they are good questions.

(to be continued...)
